In the more space-constrained micro-ATX environment, added space for such accessories is at a premium so emphasis is shifted further towards features native to the motherboard.įour single-latch DIMM slots support up to 64GB of DDR4 memory. An ATX build gives additional space to add accessories such as external RGB lighting controllers (NZXT's Hue+ springs to mind). While the limited lighting potential on the B350 Tomahawk was highly disappointing, it represents more of an issue for the micro-ATX Mortar. You basically get an LED strip connector that can be set to one of seven colours rather than true, customisable RGB mode. There’s no real RGB control that allows a user to customise the LED colour with granular control over the 16.7 million colour options. A connected 4-pin LED strip can only be set to operate using one of MSI’s seven pre-determined colour options. MSI supports 4-pin RGB strips but it is somewhat misleading for the company to claim ‘RGB’ capability. The Arctic model uses a white LED system, rather than red, in order to fit with its wider styling approach.

This colour cannot be changed in the software but it can be set to operate in a different mode or turned off completely. Onboard lighting for the motherboard is intentionally coloured red. Our analysis from the B350 Tomahawk is also relevant for the B350M Mortar: Onboard LEDs are minimal and coloured in red only, while one 4-pin RGB header allows an LED strip to be connected and lit in seven colours due to MSI's software limitations. Lighting for the B350M Mortar is the same situation as for the B350 Tomahawk. They are simply varied colour options for the same motherboard. The two distinct colour options use the exact same physical hardware and will perform identically. We did an unboxing and initial overview of the B350M Mortar Arctic HERE. If you prefer a white motherboard with white LED lighting, MSI's B350M Mortar Arctic is available. Thankfully, the single heatsink covering the CPU-driving MOSFETs uses a screw-in mounting solution rather than the weak push-pin alternative. MSI only chose to use one heatsink for the power delivery system. A dark black PCB is good to see on a low-cost motherboard as the ugly brown alternative option can quickly ruin the appearance of a build. Overall, it is a perfectly fine LED lighting implementation for such an affordable motherboard, especially for those who like RED lighting.The MSI B350M Mortar uses black and grey styling that is practically identical to that observed with the B350 Tomahawk. We do wish that there were some integrated into/under the chipset heatsink, since that would have really brought the whole look together. There are RGB LEDs under the audio isolation line, under the right edge of the motherboard, and there’s even one near the CPU socket. While the green lighting from our graphics card and Corsair pump/block unit gives the system kind of a Christmas theme, you can still get a pretty good idea on how much lighting the B350 Tomahawk puts out.

We suspect that they might only work when you install a LED light strip. The Extend LED Effects area reveals small number of colours and additional effects that, but they don’t actually apply to this particular motherboard, at least not in stock form. You can also choose to disable all effects, and just display a static colour.
Using the LED utility you can customize the lighting with your choice of five lighting effects, such as breathing, flashing, double flashing, random, or you can enable the extended effects (tied to the header) and it can react to your music or your CPU temperature. If you want to disable this feature, it is as simple as clicking the icon in the top-right corner. Whether you like LED lighting or not, you will need to install this piece of software (which is integrated into the Gaming App) since there is basically no LED settings in the UEFI. The LED utility is obviously the piece of software in charge of controlling the Mystic Light LED lighting feature. Let’s take a peek at the LED utility again: While the red “Ambient LED lights” – MSI’s term – do indeed look great on the B350 Tomahawk, if you so choose you can disable all of the red LEDs and instead use your own lighting since the onboard RGB LED header will allow you to plug in an 5050 RGB LED light strip, have it fully powered by the motherboard, and have it controlled from within the MSI LED utility. Thankfully, unlike on that higher-end model, there are no other different coloured LEDs to ruin the overall look. Much like the X370 XPower Gaming Titanium, this model does not have an RGB LED lighting feature in the strictest sense since its onboard LEDs are all one color: red.
